State Information
The only state to be named after a president, Washington is the U.S.’s premier producer of apples and has more glaciers than the other forty-seven contiguous states combined. Its industry boasts some heavy-weight figures: Boeing’s final assembly plant is the largest building in the world, resident Bill Gates is the country’s wealthiest man and coffee giant Starbucks was founded in downtown Seattle.
Becoming a state on November 11, 1889, Washington is home to 5.8 million people. Most of that population is centered around the Puget Sound on the west side of the state, in the shadow of the state’s most famous natural landmark, Mount Rainier.
